An amnesiac woman (Gong Li, Memoirs of a Geisha, Farewell My Concubine) struggles to regain her memory and reconnect with her long imprisoned husband, in this enthralling and emotional drama from Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern, Hero). With her husband, Lu Yanshi (Chen Daoming) imprisoned during China’s Cultural Revolution in the early 1970s, Feng Wanyu is left alone with their only daughter, a spoiled ballet student, Dandan (Zhang Huiwen). When Lu escapes and attempts to make his way home, a heartbreaking betrayal tears the family apart. Years later, with another chance to reunite, tragedy strikes as Feng’s mind begins to fail her.
