One of the masters of Canadian cinema, Alanis Obomsawin has spent decades chronicling the state-sanctioned indignities and injustices visited on First Nations communities, creating a remarkable body of work driven by equal parts outrage and compassion.
Obomsawin’s most recent feature documentary shines a light on the most important document in the history of Canada’s First Peoples: the infamous Treaty 9, a 1905 agreement in which First Nations communities supposedly relinquished sovereignty over their traditional lands.
