A rare breed, Regina Carter is one of the most popular violinists in jazz, with classical, R&B and African influences. Recently, she began researching the African roots of the violin, resulting in her acclaimed 2010 album Reverse Thread, exploring compositions by artists from Kenya, Mali and Senegal. Expanding on her exploration of her African ancestry, Carter has narrowed her attention to researching her family history in her latest project, Southern Comfort. Carter has collected songs to capture her father’s roots in Alabama, melding melodies and techniques found in jazz, southern rock, country and gospel genres.
