“…creating a mesmerizing tension between ancient and futuristic.” – The Chicago Reader
Ancient and modern worlds collide in a mesmerizing wave of hypnotic grooves and traditional Mauritanian spiritual music creating what is best described as Afro desert rock. Mauritania bridges the cultural divide between the Arab world and Francophone West Africa, a convergence revealed most clearly in the griots’ music. Noura Mint Seymali comes from a long line of well-known griots and is one of Mauritania’s foremost musical emissaries.
Seymali’s partner in music and life is her husband, renowned guitarist Jeiche Ould Chighaly. Together they have pioneered a new path for Moorish music by encompassing timely subjects like gender in Islamic society while respecting the music’s instrumental core and creating a live music experience that is both trance-like and completely unique.
