Michelle Carlson

Her practice addresses memory and decay, presence and absence. She uses textiles, found garments, and appropriated photographs to perpetuate these ideas, often embracing their imperfections in order to expose the process of aging and decomposition. Through her work as an assistant to an exhibit preparator at a museum, she is constantly engaged in the examination and analysis of historical artifacts. In an attempt to create a dialogue about these experiences she transforms the lifeless material to three-dimensional dynamic encounters. Feelings of nostalgia, recollection, and a sense of loss flow through the work, reminding us how our life’s adventures and observations are destined to vanish with forgotten memories and old photographs and more importantly with our own demise. Michelle is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Fraser Valley.
