May 16 – June 08
Mon – Sat, 12-5pm
Capilano University and The North Vancouver Community Arts Council present the Capilano University Textile Arts Grad Show at CityScape. Opening reception: Thursday, May 16, 7-9 pm. Artist Talk: Saturday, May 18, 2pm.
This graduating class of students from the Textile Arts Program at Capilano University explore a range of approaches and techniques to textile arts. Included are art pieces on the wall, installations, garments meant to be worn or objects used in the home. They express a variety of positions of personal social and ecological concerns.
This year our focus is on works that are transformative or tell personal stories visually or in abstract/symbolic ways. Some pieces are more influenced by traditional works that are made by hand, while others explore 21st century technologies aided by computers, such as use of computer assisted Jacquard weaving or digital printing.
Increasingly Textile Arts is gaining popularity with a younger generation through various DIY movements and various Internet communities. While some works explore new materials and approaches, others show true dedication to mastering traditional techniques. The works in the exhibition range from silk-screening, printing and various surface treatments with dyes and stitched designs, to woven, felted and knitted pieces.
