As climate catastrophes are fast becoming the threat of choice for realists and doomsayers alike, we find ourselves in a cultural shift towards art that can provoke us. In Deborah’s works, singular images symbolic of childhood innocence and freedom emerge as emptied human–hewn platforms. Dangling precariously and juxtaposed against violent skies, the platforms suggest fallout that alludes to our current and necessary preoccupation with climate change and the tentative, solitary relationships we have with our shared environment. Tension and movement are purposely wrought in all of her paintings through the use of stark contrasts in colour value and intensity, form and line.
