It’s time to get ready for winter! That’s right, if you want a productive food growing garden through the winter then you need to plan ahead and get started early. Save a little space in your garden, and join local expert and farmer, Gavin Wright, to learn about growing hardy food crops in the depths of our West Coast winters.
In this workshop you will learn:
- how to plan and preparing your garden for winter crops
- tips on choosing your varieties
- managing the winter climate challenges of light, wind, and temperature
- simple season extension techniques
- the difference between winter harvest crop and over-wintering crops
Gavin Wright is the resident farmer at Loutet Farm in North Vancouver. After working with UBC Farm, Gavin set out farming for two seasons in Pemberton. His favourite days of the week were spent at the Farmers Markets because he had the opportunity to talk and connect with people buying his produce. His role with the Edible Garden Project at Loutet Farm combines in all: hands-on farming, educating and celebrating the growing Loutet Farm community.
Participant Instructions: This is a combination of hands-on and lecture style workshop. Please be prepared to spend some time outside, and dress for the weather appropriately.
You can register for this workshop by calling the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre at 604-990-3755 or call our farm at 604-987-8138 ext 231 and speak to Emily Jubenvill.
