Maziar Mehrabi at the District Library Gallery North Vancouver

Evolution of the Emoticon

Combining his appreciation for the superheroes and villains of comic books with his fascination for emoticons and the roles they both play in contemporary society, Maziar creates a highbred graphic art series celebrating both.

He is intrigued how these tiny expressions originally made of punctuation marks, numbers and letters have evolved into digital characters. Now widely used in everyday communication, they convey more comprehensive emotions or express full ideas, and like a superhero or villain, his highbred works embody dynamic characteristics.
