In small-town Texas, local assistant mortician Bernie Tiede, a beloved member of the community, becomes the only friend of the wealthy, recently widowed Marjorie Nugent, who is widely considered cold and unpleasant.
Tiede, and the elderly Nugent quickly become inseparable, though Tiede’s life becomes hindered by Nugent’s constant and sometimes abusive need for his attention. When the caustic widow’s body is discovered.
District Attorney Buck Davidson vows that justice will be served, but he finds it difficult to build a convincing case as the locals rally to his defense in this darkly hilarious true-crime saga of the most likable killer in Texas history.
