The BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts is proud to announce its 13th year of the North Shore Jazz series, in partnership with the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Ticketed shows will be held at Capilano University, the Kay Meek Centre and Presentation House Theatre, with a line-up of free, family-friendly shows at Civic Plaza, and the West Vancouver Memorial Library.
Series highlights include a tribute to the guitar music of the 50s and 60s by influential jazz guitarist Bill Frisell and his stellar band, a reunion of brothers, Dave and Phil Alvin who join forces again after 30 years, and pure jazz fusion magic with Lansiné Kouyaté, a balafon virtuoso from Mali, and French jazz vibraphonist, David Neerman. Enjoy the achingly souful voice and fabulous finger picking and slide guitar stylings of Kelly Joe Phelps and finally, closing the series is another not-to-be-missed reunion of Victoria swing band, Paul Pigat and the Smokin’ Jackets.
Three free shows will happen across the two weekends with the soulful stylings of The Nightcrawlers featuring Capilano University alumna Dawn Pemberton, Portland’s alt-Euro-cabaret, Vagabond Opera and local rock ‘n’ roll cowboy surfers, The Modelos.
Paul Pigat and the Smokin’ Jackets
One of Vancouver’s most understated yet talented musical heroes, singer/songwriter and guitarist Paul Pigat (aka Cousin Harley), combines the elegance of jazz, with a rockabilly sound, in a hobo’s soul.
Take a sentimental journey with Paul and his brilliant combo in this rebirth of the Smokin’ Jackets, one of his early swing projects and a forerunner of the late 90s swing revival.
Former luminaries of the band include the likes of Michael Harriot, Clinton Ryder, and Michael Kaeshammer. Come on down for a chance to see this special reunion in an up close and personal setting.
